Vanguard Arts Collective illuminates current stories through the dark and comedic. We spotlight the work of living artists (and welcome our audiences to get a little lit themselves). By exploring the bounds of technical design, sparking conversation is in our circuitry.

CHRIS OWENS

Chris hails from the great state of Nebraska. He is a freelance director, video designer, and technician around Chicago. Previous to his time in Chicago, Chris worked with Actors Theatre of Louisville, New York Stage and Film, Assistant Directed at Woolly Mammoth Theatre, and toured internationally as a video technician for Pilobolus Dance Theater. He earned a BFA in Theatre, Journalism, and Media at Doane College.

MEGAN CHANEY

Megan is a freelance stage manager and scenic designer around the city, and received her BFA in Theatre Management from The University of Colorado at Boulder. Megan has previously worked with Pride Films and Plays, Piccolo Theatre, Muse of Fire, The Comrades, and St. Sebastian Players. Before moving to Chicago, she worked with Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, and SeaWorld San Antonio. More details on previous work is available at her website, here.

DERRIK CASTILLO

Derrik Castillo, originally from Nebraska, moved to Chicago in 2014. He earned his BFA in Music with an emphasis in Vocal Performance and Theatre at Doane College. Derrik has had the pleasure of working with several companies throughout the Midwest, including; The Rose Theatre, The Nebraska Theatre Caravan, The Omaha Community Playhouse, Snap! Productions, The Lied Center for Performing Arts and Steppenwolf Theatre. He is extremely excited and grateful to be a member of this team and for the future of Vanguard Arts Collective.

MATT SCHUTZ

Matt is a playwright and actor currently based in Chicago. His play With the Weight of her Fate on her Shoulders was a winner of the New South Young Playwrights Contest, was workshopped at the Horizon Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia and earned him a finalist slot for the Dramatist’s Guild Young Playwright Award. His plays Full Circle and The Stoddard Stud House were both developed at the University of Iowa. He joined the Vanguard Arts Collective in 2019 after appearing in their inaugural production of Colorado.
